Professor Adrian Săftoiu

Professor Săftoiu is employed in the Department of Gastroenterology, Research Center of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Craiova, Romania. Prof Săftoiu graduated in 1995 in the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Craiova, followed by specializations in internal medicine and gastroenterology in 2000 and 2002, respectively.

Professor Săftoiu has received intensive training in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with emphasis on endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, in several centers abroad, including University Hospital Aarhus and Gentofte University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark. Other clinical stages included telemedicine training of 4 months at the University of Maryland at College Park, USA, confocal laser endomicroscopy training in Mainz, Germany, and a short-term observer visit in the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA.

Scientific activity includes the publication of more than 100 papers in scientific journals, including 50 papers in journals indexed in Medline or ISI Web of Science, as well as 12 books, including 3 book chapters published in print in the USA. As a consequence the number of citations according to ISI Web of Science was around 100, while the Hirsch h-index (based on Google Scholar) was 11, cited in October 2010.

Professor Săftoiu is a member of several scientific societies in Romania and abroad, including the European Federation of Societies of Ultrasonography in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB), American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). Experience as an evaluator was based on the “peer-review” activity in the following journals: Gastroenterology, Pancreatology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, European Journal of Ultrasound (Ultraschall in der Medizin) and Journal of Clinical Ultrasound.

Current research interests include hybrid imaging techniques, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound, including elastography and contrast-enhanced examinations, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), virtual palpation techniques, etc.
